How to teach kids to save money (by age)

Saving is a skill that must be practised, not assumed. This guide shows how to build the habit by age — with concrete goals, visual progress and fun games, not pressure.

Why saving is hard for kids

Kids live in the "now": an instant reward beats a later one. Saving is the skill of delaying — it must be practised, not assumed. The trick is making the goal visible and near so patience feels worth it.

Tools: a goal + visualising it

Let the child pick a goal, estimate how long it takes, then colour a progress bar each time they add money. Seeing it "grow" is the strongest motivator for kids.

Frequently asked questions

How do I get my child to save?
Set a concrete goal the child likes and visualise progress so they see money grow.
What age should saving start?
From ages 4–6 with a piggy bank and a small goal; scale up with age.
Should parents add a bonus for saving?
A small bonus (like "interest") can teach compounding, but the main driver should be the child’s own goal.
What if my child keeps dipping into savings?
Separate the Spend jar from the Save jar; save toward a goal the child truly wants.
Does Rùa Vàng have saving games?
